The second choice for the Rockets main controller - Amen Thompson, will he be the new letter or Westbrook?

After Shams revealed that Rockets point guard Van Vleet had torn the ACL with the ACL, the famous reporter of The Ringer and host of the NBA Show J. Kyle Mann updated his latest views and scout reports on several Rockets' ball-handling substitutes in self-media. The part about Amen Thompson as the main controller was excerpted, translated and refined as follows:
This offseason, Amen Thompson may have received more praise than any player in the NBA podcast program, which is right. He may be the best outside player in the NBA in the past decade, and he has been able to make good use of his talent. Because of this, he and his twin brother Osal both became the top defenders in the league. His growth will be a major highlight of the new NBA season. Even if his role will increase no matter what, VanVleet's injury will still provide him with a chance to explode - but this is another complicated proposition. His characteristics are as follows: 1. The impact force and speed change ability in the conversion offense may be the smooth athletic ability that fades any initial sense of danger; Amen will remind Giannis Antetokounmpo in the conversion offense, because he can push the defender into that "bad, bad" crazy retreat situation quite quickly. His gait may be visually fascinating, but the reality is that if he grabs the rebound, turns his head and drops his greedy gaze on the rim, there will be no moment of peace next. His slowdown was as firm as his acceleration, and he was as smooth as a ballet and had a huge stride when changing directions in the penalty area, not to mention that we all know his vertical bounce ability.
When the defender feels that he seems to have controlled the situation, you will see Amen's legs change, and he just decides to rush directly into the penalty area. You either keep yourself in a passive situation of foul or try to face him early to stop him from rushing straight into the frame (in this case, Amen usually uses his spring legs to use the direction to avoid the defender). It's even more interesting when his fierce defenses purely trigger these transition offensive scenes - in the rounds where he used his karate-like movements to disrupt tactical coordination so quickly, even the offensive players were curious about what had just happened.
These are all interesting, but as we know, the impact of converting offense is a relatively healthy feature of the team's offense, but it is not the only driving force. So what will the offense built around Thompson's skill pack look like?
2. Start the ball pick-and-roll at a high position to get room for acceleration (does it look familiar?)
Amen's effective pick-and-roll raid has one major commonality with his successful conversion offense: both allow him to gain momentum away from the basket, which earned him the start time to rush to the basket. More than three-quarters of this type of pick-and-roll tactics start with a high-end ball cover, and in most cases he will choose the box.
Amen was so fast that in the above round, Yves Missy failed to completely open her hips, which led to Amen's success.
3. The ball-holding offensive skills need to be improved quickly (the playoff opponent's inside siege trap)
Of course, some people will say that Amen is still not a threat outside the three-point line. And he doesn't make a shot because he can't make a shot. You can praise him for avoiding the missed shot, but this also causes the defender to pose inside the three-point line early and get stuck in the position in advance. And when Amen enters the three-point line, the defender usually gives him 3 to 4 feet of space, so that he will either try to attack in the crowd or try his emergency stop and small throws. And it will be especially difficult for Amen when the defender is willing to put four players outside the three-point line to kill his pass option and get the extra defender ready to dig the ball.
Put him in the right position and he should improve, become stronger as a finisher, and be able to observe the game better, but for a team that wants to compete for the championship, it is obviously worrying to let him take the ball offense.
Summary: From the overall perspective, we have reason to believe that Thompson's offensive organizational potential is still huge. His destructive power on both sides of the offense and defense may have concealed that he was an offensive organizer since childhood (it is always interesting to observe the roles that the twin brothers often play together), and perhaps he has developed more inconspicuous parts of his playing style because of his short-swinging or empty-cutting hands and no clear half-field position attack. Last season, it was only occasionally possible to see a defender coming to stop him from breaking through, and in the new season if his ball-holding offense is more threatening, this usually creates simple pass channels and shooting opportunities at the wing position.
What is most interesting to me is that Thompson and Shepard have shown signs of tacit understanding because their skill packages are complementary - Shepard's ball-holding shots endorsed Thompson's fierce breakthrough, and the latter can use this to create more 3-pointers for the former.
So, do you want to see a younger and impactful Westbrook, or do you want to see an all-round warrior Andre Iguodala who is both offensive and defensive?
