See you next season! Warriors season summary and offseason guide! How to cherish Curry s championship window
9:31am, 18 May 2025【Basketball】
Golden State Warriors 2024-25 Record: 48-34
June Draft: No. 41 (via MIA)
Free players:
Jonathan Kumingga, Gary Payton II, Kevin Looney, Kevin Knox II, Ji Santos (T), Pat Spencer (right), Quinten Post (T), Braxton Kee and Taran Armstrong
Roster Status:
Failed to advance from the second round, especially without Stephen Curry, does not change the fact that the Warriors are in a better position than the first half of the season.
For further proof, check out the 30 games before Jimmy Butler's arrival. The Warriors have a record of 12-18 and are ranked 10 last in offensive and defensive efficiency.
The improvements they have made since Butler's All-Star Game, and their first-round victory over the Houston Rockets, are the blueprints for the Golden State Warriors next season. The starting lineups of Curry, Brandin Pozimsky, Moses Moody, Butler and Greene scored 16-3 in the regular season, scoring -17.9 points per 100 possessions. All five have contracts next season.
Despite the success in the second half of the season, the lineup still needs improvement. The first round against Houston and then lost Curry, revealing the need for a stable third scorer. Solving the problem of insufficient frontcourt size is also a priority. In the playoffs, the Golden State Warriors averaged the third-most points per game. To meet both needs, the Golden State Warriors are expected to be active in free agents and trading markets. The Warriors did not have their own first-round pick in June, but there are four first-rounds to be used in future trades! The
barrier may come from piecing together enough salary to make a big deal, not including Green. The Warriors’ salary is top-heavy, with Curry, Butler and Green accounting for 85% of their payroll.
Offseason Financial Status:
Restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga's future plays a major role in the Warriors' flexibility this offseason. Without Kumingga on the roster, the Golden State Warriors are $17.5 million less than the luxury tax. They are $255,000 and $37 million lower than the two luxury tax lines, respectively. They can use their $14.1 million non-tax intermediate exception! The top priority of management: How to deal with Kumingga's renewal
Butler deal opened a window to the championship. “It’s exciting that Jimmy gave us the opportunity to extend this for a few years,” coach Steve Cole told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk in April. The years Cole mentioned happens to be the few years left in Butler, Green and Curry’s contract. How the Warriors use their short time may be up to Jonathan Cumingga.
Kuminga has started in 56 games in the past two years, averaging at least 15 consecutive points, but his role has decreased in the end of the season and in the first round of the playoffs. “Frankly, Jimmy, Jonathan and Draymond’s lineups aren’t right. It just doesn’t,” Cole told 95.7 The Game in April. When Cuminga, Butler and Green played together, the Warriors lost 28.2 points per 100 possessions. This lineup did improve in the second round of losing to Minnesota. When all three were on the court, the Warriors had a plus-9.4 points, Kuminga averaged 20.4 points per game and shot over 50% from the second round.
The Warriors are expected to offer him a $7.9 million year-on-year qualification offer, making him a restricted free agent. What happened could be a game of waiting. Since Brooklyn is the only team that can offer a starting salary of $20 million or more (Golden State has the right to match), the best option is probably that both parties are exploring signing and dealing.
Extension candidates to focus on:
How does the roster schedule, age and impact on the court play when weighing the possible Draymond Green renewal? Green signed a four-year contract in 2023 and is now eligible to extend it for another two years ($36.3 and $39.2 million, respectively). Green will be 37 years old in the second year of his contract extension, when Curry and Butler's contract expires. When Green was on the court, the Warriors had a positive -6.7 points per 100 possessions and a negative 1.2 points per game without him. He recently finished third in the Defensive Player of the Year vote and is likely to see his name on the best defensive team for the ninth time in his career.
Other renewal candidates: Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II and Trayce Jackson-Davis
Team requirements:
A moving rim guard, a steady 3-pointer, frontcourt depth and a defensive back (especially if they lose Payton to become a free agent).
Draft Resources:
Even though they abandoned their 2025 No. 1 pick in the Butler trade, the Golden State Warriors still have four first-round picks available for trade. They can include up to four draft picks in the trade – 2026, 2028, 2030 (if 1-20) and 2032. If Washington is out of the top 20 in 2030, they will give 2030 to Washington. The Golden State Warriors were also allowed to exchange first place for the next seven seasons. The Warriors have a second round player available.
