NBA free agent rumors: Horford joins the Warriors is a foregone conclusion, but there is a factor that may determine success or failure

Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors remain a favorite for Al Horford in the free agency market, according to Athletic's Anthony Slater on Sunday. According to NBA insiders, "The Warriors are operating, as if Horford is part of their plan for next season." Although it seems to be a foregone conclusion, Slater added that the deadlock between Kumingga and the team has temporarily put Horford's signing on hold.

Jonathan Kumingga, a restricted free agent, rejected the Warriors' $7.9 million qualifying offer at the end of June. Unsurprisingly, General Manager Mike Dunleavy's offseason plan took a hit due to the deadlock. Earlier this month, Slater reported that the Warriors had issued a two-year $45 million contract. The deal includes a second year team option and a waiver of the non-trading terms, which Kumingga reportedly disagrees with.

According to Slater, the 22-year-old turned down the offer because he did not want the Warriors to trade him when he qualifies next January. Nor will Kumingga give up his non-trade clause, which will give him the upper hand in trade negotiations. The 6-foot-8 forward reportedly demanded a three-year, $82 million contract, a figure left by the Golden State Warriors.

While the parties continued to pose, the Warriors temporarily put their pursuit of Al Horford on the spot. According to Slater, the former Boston Celtics star could also choose to retire if the big man couldn’t find the right spot. Kumingga’s problem prevents Dunleavy from meeting the Warriors’ shooting and organizational needs.

The Warriors reportedly believe that Al Horford is the perfect team.

The Boston Celtics have carefully monitored Horford's playing time and workload over the past four seasons. They often don't let him play back-to-back games to keep his 39-year-old knee fresh. When it's possible to play, this big man is a reliable contributor both as a starter and as a substitute.

In four seasons with the Celtics, he averaged 9.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. Horford shot 46.8% from the field, of which 39.2% were shot from long distances. If the Warriors can sign Curry, they can get another outside threat.

In addition to Horford's outstanding performance in space, Anthony Slater also pointed out another reason:

Horford will be the starting center, easing Drummond Green's burden in the regular season, which is a priority. Horford's passing and defensive abilities are very suitable for the Warriors' system. ”

The Warriors seem to be welcoming Horford's new season. They can get their dream free agents as long as they can solve the chaos of Jonathan Cumingga.
