Lakers trading rumors: Insiders believe that the Lakers are not interested in trading for the Warriors former player Wiggins

9:17am, 16 July 2025【Basketball】

The Los Angeles Lakers have been associated with Andrew Wiggins for the past few weeks. However, no agreement has been reached on both sides. The Heat's reportedly core bonuses with Rui Hachimura, Dalton Kneckett and the Lakers' only tradeable first-round draft picks prevented the negotiations from escalating.

However, on Tuesday's "The Zach Lowe Show, Lakers insider Dan Walker denied the rumor. When Lowe approached part of the proposal to trade James and the Heat, Wiggins was part of the deal, Walker said: "They (the Lakers) were not interested in Wiggins. I think I could solve this problem. I am very confident about it." The Lakers have limited assets and they are unlikely to use their best assets on Wiggins, 30, who earns about $59 million in the next two seasons. While his perimeter defense will provide the Lakers with much-needed momentum, it doesn't make sense to invest in assets like Hachimura, Knnett and the 2031 draft pick in this deal.

They can retain existing main players and rotation players and have greater flexibility in 2026, with three first-round picks to trade (2026, 2031 and 2033). In 2027, it will allow them to have greater cap flexibility.

The Lakers reorganized the lineup in the offseason with Luca Doncic as the center

The Los Angeles Lakers optimized their resources during the offseason. So far, they have met two needs: using the non-taxpayer middle-class exception contract amount to add a starting-level center DeAndrew Ayton and a two-way wing Jack Laravia after Dorian Finney-Smith joined the Rockets on a four-year contract.

The Lakers do not want to provide any player with a contract of more than two years, and they have been sticking to this operation. They also renewed Jackson Hayes as a backup big man with a one-year contract, giving him 120% of his salary last season.

Lakers are linked with Bradley Bill and Damian Lillard in free agency as they hope to step up rotations as the playoffs come. The team is still looking for more outside defense, which may be achieved through marginal upgrades.

Matis Tibur is one of the Lakers' trading goals and he can do this role. His contract expires and may not cost much money.
