Three years after selling Chelsea, Russian billionaire Abu spoke for the first time: he will never touch football clubs again
9:41pm, 12 June 2025【Football】
A book called "Sanctions: Chelsea Football Club's Insider Story" was published on the 10th. On the same day, the first news of Russian billionaire and former Premier League Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich speaking out about the matter was revealed three years after selling the team.
Abramovich said he would "no longer participate in professional football activities or own any football clubs." It is reported that this is Abramovich's statement in February this year when he was interviewed by the author of the above-mentioned new book Nick Prevor in Abu Dhabi. At the same time, this is also his first interview since selling Chelsea Football Club.

Abramovich told Nick: "After losing Chelsea, I don't want to have any other football club." He said that he was no longer interested in everything about the football club. "I may provide more opportunities for players from difficult families and may provide more help to young players. But I never want to be related to the position of 'football club owner' in my life."
Abramovich added that he still hopes to watch Chelsea games in the future and say "good goodbye" to the team, "but that's all." It is reported that Abramovich's last public interview was interviewed by Forbes in March 2021.
According to reports, Abramovich spent 130 million pounds to acquire the British Chelsea Football Club in economic trouble in 2003. After his creation, Chelsea has been among the top European football clubs in the past 20 years, winning many championships including the Champions League and the Premier League.
After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK and the EU for being "closely ties with K-K Palace". According to Global Network, in 2022, after being sanctioned by the UK and the EU, Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium led by US investor Todd Boley and private equity firm Minghu Capital for £2.5 billion. Under the terms of the deal, the money will be donated to create humanitarian charities. Since then, the money has been frozen in a bank account by the British government and must obtain special permission from the financial sanctions agency under the UK Treasury before use.
The report quoted sources as saying that the British government asked to hand over all the money to Ukraine, but Abramovich proposed that the funds should be used for humanitarian aid projects that benefit countries, not limited to providing them to Ukraine, and the two sides have not reached an agreement for this. On June 3, British Chancellor Reeves and Foreign Minister Rami issued a joint statement saying that the British government is ready to take Abramovich to court because of the deadlock in negotiations.
