The Sun: UEFA is investigating Lyon’s new player Gazal for playing illegally in the Europa League

On October 24, the "Sun" reported that UEFA has officially launched an investigation into Lyon's illegal use of player Rashid Ghazal in the Europa League.

Ghazal played and assisted in Lyon's 1-0 away victory over Utrecht, but according to UEFA regulations, he was not eligible to participate.

Ghazal only joined Lyon on September 5 and missed the registration deadline for the Europa League A list at midnight on September 2. At the same time, because he was born in 1992, he does not meet the age requirements of the B list, that is, he must be born on January 1, 2004 or later. UEFA confirmed in a statement that Ghazal was ineligible for UEFA club competitions until the next registration period and had removed him from the squad ahead of the game against Red Bull Salzburg. Utrecht has lodged a formal complaint in this regard.

However, Lyon may not be punished for this in the end. There are two main reasons: first, it is said that UEFA made a mistake in the registration process and mistakenly registered Ghazal instead of Lyon knowingly using an unregistered player; second, it was reported that Utrecht submitted the appeal beyond the 24 hours after the game stipulated by UEFA. The case is still under investigation.
