Malouda: Gittens needs to understand that Chelsea fans have the right to criticize him and players need to play well
3:56pm, 8 October 2025【Football】
Hupu October 8th Chelsea legend Maluda was interviewed by TheAthleticUK before the charity legend match with Liverpool.
In 2007, when Maluda transferred from Lyon to Chelsea for £13.5 million, he was highly expected. He won the Ligue 1 championship for four consecutive seasons with Lyon and lost to Italy's French team in the World Cup final a year ago. Maluda, 27, is also a more mature player. Gittens just turned 21 two months ago.
Maluda also plays mainly on the left, but in his first season in the Premier League, he only contributed two goals and one assist. Like Gittens, he is also full of complaints and dissatisfaction from fans.
"You should not be affected by this, they are your fans and have the right to express their feelings. If you play at a club like Chelsea, both home and away (like this), you have to be able to withstand this pressure to understand that they want you to play at the best.
They do not do this to make you underperform, but to send you a message that you need to understand.
How did I earn their trust? It's a strong relationship based on commitment . I devote myself to the club. Every transfer window is full of rumors, but I still fight for the club and strive to win the trust of the fans.
The fans also repay me because they see that I really love the club and see that I do my best to defend the club. I have the opportunity to compete in the Champions League and the Premier League and the FA Cup. They feel that I am a trustworthy player. Ultimately, it is a success story. "
Speaking of Gittens's proof process, Maluda is also very candid.
"It's a learning process, and when you join a club like Chelsea at such a young age, you have to build confidence. It's part of your career.
(Gettens's) talent is there, and the key is how you can do it at this level. When you are young, you have to be fearless, and that's the only way out.
Club believes in him, and it's important how he proves to the club members who trust him that he belongs to this club. The charm of football is that a goal, an assist, or a little flash of Jamie can turn the world around.
He should also believe that he can do it and be able to continue to achieve results. He can ignite the enthusiasm of the court with a goal, and then everything starts."
Maluda believes that it should be taken into account, but he also realizes that Gittens can't take too long to adapt. He explained:
"Adapting to the Premier League takes time, but at the same time, you don't have time. Every transfer window is a chance for the club to reshape the team.
Everyone wants results. When you invest in a new player, the goal is to improve the roster. In England, people may not be as patient with the players signed in the last transfer window. Everyone wants to be excited about the new player.
In other leagues, clubs need time to watch them. The growth of the signed players. In England (due to the abundant funding), they have the opportunity to correct some problems in the next transfer window.
This puts more pressure on any player in the club, not just those who have just joined. You have to quickly understand how fierce the competition is to play in England. "
Maluda admits that Gittens does get into a more difficult environment than in 2007, as many of his teammates are also in the early stages of their careers.
"This is part of the strategy of the new boss. When they first came, they invested in young players who signed long-term contracts. When I joined, the situation was different. There were more experienced players on the team, who either won the championship at Chelsea, won the championship in the league they played in before, or had already played for the national team.
The team has a lot more experience and a more distinct personality, which all stems from their bloodline.
The goal of this program is to cultivate young players who need to work together to win. It's a different program, which is why these young players are under greater pressure. When you see the money invested by the club and their worth, I think the expectations and burdens on their shoulders are also greater."
The importance of preseason?
"In the short term, this is important, but it is not about proving yourself in two or three months. You have to look at the big picture. If a player belongs to Chelsea and plays on this stage, then the preseason is not important. What matters is how to adjust yourself and build confidence in challenging situations. It has nothing to do with being young or experienced; when you have a chance to play, you need to show off your performance.
Cole Palmer has some injury problems at the moment. Every player should see this as an opportunity and be prepared. It doesn't matter where the opportunity comes from. Every opportunity to wear this jersey is an opportunity to show your talent when you compete with your opponent. You have to be prepared at all times.
Preseason is over; you should not use it as an excuse."
Maluda believes that Gittens should not regard Garnacho's joining as a negative factor.
"You need to compete to get to the best. The sooner you accept reality, the more you can make a difference. It's not a problem.
When you come to a club like Chelsea, you have to choose an environment like this. I remember when I was there, Chelsea signed a new striker every year.
They have Didier Drogba, Hernan Crespo, Andre Shevchenko and so on. That's exactly what you want because the team will be more competitive and you need to improve your game."
